Autumn Fairy Costume: The Finale (Finally!)

Halloween is scarily near and I have tons left to do for the party. The one thing I do have finished is Zara's fairy costume! Yay! It only took me a couple of hours to do, so I have no idea what I was procrastinating so much.

First thing I did was make the tutus. Yes, that's right. More than one tutu. Two tutus, truthfully. (I love alliteration.) I wanted a very layered look and that was the easiest way I could think of. If you want step-by-step directions on how to make your own, The Idea Room is the place to go. This is pretty much the technique I used and the model is darling.

Tulle, tulle, and more tulle.

The craft store had ran out of orange pre-cut tulle, so I bought three yards off the bolt and cut it myself. I started this project out using my brand-spanking-new rotary cutter. Yeah...
Hello Kitty "boo-boo stickers" are a must!
After the second cut I switched back to my old-but-trusty scissors.

Glitter!!!!
I had so much glitter to clean up! After I got the brown and gold tutu finished, I took it outside, shook it a bunch, and sprayed the whole thing with hairspray.

Orange tutu with fabric leaves hot glued on.

Both tutus layered together.
I then decided to do a pin to go on the waistband of the tutu that would coordinate with the headband. Click here to revisit that post. I used a floral pick, a pin back, and a small piece of felt. Easy and quick!

The ingredients.
The front. Kind of blurry, so you'll just have to believe me, I guess.

The back. Ignore the glue blobs. I did.
And, of course, every fairy needs wings. This couldn't be easier. I picked up a set of orange wings at the Dollar Tree. I couldn't just let them be plain-Jane wings. They got a bit of a face lift with more fabric leaves and the straps were colored brown to go with the shirt.
Plain wings are sad wings.

I used a Prismacolor marker in Dark Brown to color the straps.

Finished! Told you this was super easy!
My little fairy needed a top to wear with the same panache and style as the rest of her costume. I'm just learning to sew, so I didn't feel comfortable actually making her one. Instead, I found one in the boy's section of Old Navy and prettied it up.

The ingredients.
I just used a metallic antique gold acrylic paint. I'm all about using stuff that's laying around the house.
Put something inside the shirt so the paint won't soak all the way through.

Voila!
And, finally, you can't go Trick-or-Treating without a treat bag.

I cut two pieces of fleece. The bag is 30 x 11 inches. The strap is 1 x 22 inches.
I sewed up the sides with my sewing machine, which my machine hated. Poor little thing! I also tried to box the corners on the machine. It *really* hated that. I ended up finishing it by hand. If you're interested in knowing how to box the corners of a bag, craftapple has a really good tutorial.

I sewed the handles on by hand and added buttons for cuteness.

More fabric leaves!
The hot glue showed up through the leaves, so I used some of the antique gold acrylic paint to make swirly designs on the leaves. When Zara saw it, she said, "Cool purse!" I love that kid.
