Makeover Monday: Easy Memo Board Re-Do

From very 90s to very now.

Way back in the 90s I did something I thought was very cool, very clever, and oh-so stylish. I decorated my very plain memo board using stencils and sponges. Specifically, an ivy stencil that matched my curtains, my bedspread and sheets, my bedroom suite, and, yes, my wallpaper border with matching light switch plate, also decorated by me. Ivy was very "in" in the 90s. Not so much now.

I had mad sponging skillz.

Life has moved on from ivy stencils and sponge painting techniques. Thank goodness. This project can be Super Simple. I did two coats of acrylic paint, so that took a bit longer than 15 minutes.

Ingredients:
  • Memo board
  • Acrylic paint
  • Sponge brush
  • Fabric
  • Scissors

Paint the frame with acrylic craft paint. Mine needed two coats.

After the paint is dry, cut a piece of fabric a bit larger than the exposed cork area. Carefully tuck in one end into the frame with a case knife or a putty knife. Pull the opposite side taut, but not too tight, and tuck it in. Repeat on the remaining two sides. If you want, you can spray the cork with a spray adhesive. That would make the transformation more permanent. If you don't use glue, it'll be easy to switch out the fabric on a whim to match changing decor or to coordinate with the holidays.

Tuck in the fabric edges with a case knife.

And that's it! Told ya it was easy.

lie in bed all day and read."  — Raymond Carver

This is one of my favorite notes of all time from my husband. I keep it on the memo board above my craft desk.

Reminder - You need to craft 2 nite. Seán

  1. Nice job Tabitha! So glad that sponge painting ivy era is gone. I don't miss it at all. I remember I stenciled ivy all around my bedroom back in the late 80's. I was so proud of it. Cute note from Hubby too.
