A Fishy Felt Cat Toy

Just a little fish swimming by the window.

It's Iron Craft day! This week's challenge was Best in Show, which was all about pets. Animals in general, really. And, since I have three cats, I thought I'd make them a little something...even if they do keep me up all night and wreck everything I own. I love them anyway. Dunno why. I guess they're just too cute to kick out of the house. I whipped up a little felt fish toy for them.

Ingredients:
  • Craft felt
  • Batting
  • Embroidery floss
  • Embroidery needle
  • Scissors
  • Disappearing ink pen
  • Elastic cord
  • Suction cup
First thing I did was freehand a fish shape onto my felt using my disappearing ink pen. I've provided a template for you below.

Draw a fish or use my template to make things easier for you.

You'll need two of these. To speed things up a bit, I doubled up the felt and cut them out at the same time. Be careful doing this so they don't shift around while cutting.

Two felt fishies.

Time for my (least) favorite part. Sewing. I used two strands of embroidery floss. Dunno what the stitch is called. I hate sewing.  Leave a section open to stuff in the batting. Sew that up.

Sewing!!!! Grr!!!!

I added eyes just because it makes the fish a bit more cute. The eyes were easy to do. I just kept sewing a vaguely dot shape through both sides. Keep flipping the fish back and forth to make sure both sides look good.

Then poke a hole through the top fin to slide in a bit of elastic cord. Tie it in a very secure knot.

Fish needs a cord.

Tie the other end of the cord around the suction cup, stick the whole thing to a window or any other smooth surface, and sit back to watch the fun begin.

Finished felt fish. I <3 alliteration.

 I think they like it.

Berkeley & Caius taking turns.

And a collage of kitty fun...

  1. Cute, cute, cute! Thanks for the template! I'm going to make some for our cats, I think I'll stuff with batting and maybe something crinkly too. The love noise. Great idea!
