No-Sew Napkins

The start to my napkin collection.

My favorite part of participating in Iron Craft? The fact that it makes me get somethings done. I'm great at planning projects, but tend to lack in the follow-through department. I've had these no-sew napkins planned for a while, but it took Iron Craft's For the Table challenge to get me to do them.

Ingredients:
  • Men's shirt
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Seam ripper
I saw this project in Whole Living and loved how it recycled old shirts to make something good for the planet.  Their version made 12" napkins, but I made 11" napkins. I figured I could eke out a few more out of the shirts. I made seven out of one large shirt. Pretty good, right?

The frayed edges are a nice (and sew-free) touch.

This is a very simple, if somewhat time-consuming, project. You just cut the squares out of the shirts and then use a seam ripper to help fray the edges by picking out the individual threads until you have a border the size you want it. Here's a helpful hint: It's easier to do this on a checked or plaid shirt because you have built-in cut lines. The first ones I made were on a plain fabric, and it was much more difficult to fray the edges.

I have a stack of old shirts that I'm guessing will be turned into a stack of napkins soon. As soon as I get around to it, anyway.

  1. I feel the same way about Iron Craft, I've gotten so much more done this year! Do you stitch around the edge after you've frayed them to keep them from fraying more or do they seem to stay pretty well on their own?

  2. Nope. No stitching. I haven't used them yet, but I'll update after washing them. :-)
