I Heart Books Recycled Bookmark

I heart books!

Done reading? That's the question asked by Iron Craft's challenge. The instructions were to do something with a book. To be honest, my stomach was in knots over this one. Books have always been sacred to me. I've always felt that they should be handled with care and given respect. Yeah, even those biographies from reality television stars. Okay...maybe not so much those books, but you get what I'm saying. The idea of cutting up a book is horrifying to me. I really thought about skipping this one and then I remembered something...

I had a dictionary from 1994 that was ripped (don't ask, 'cause I don't know how that happened) all the way through the spine. And it was only a dollar. In 1994. My favorite part of this dictionary was that it features a section on new computer terms. In 1994. And, yeah, floppy disk is in there. I think the world can afford to let this one go.

I guess the Hulk got mad at this outdated dictionary.

Ingredients:
  • Piece of recycled cardboard
  • Dictionary page
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Ink
  • Stamp
  • Rub on transfer
  • Hole reinforcements
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Twine
  • Bead
  • Mod Podge
I clipped out a bookmark-sized piece of cardboard from an empty food box and covered both sides with scrapbook paper and Mod Podge.

Told ya I love books. See? The bookmark says so!

I flipped through the dictionary and landed on the word epic. Perfect! I cut out that page and then tore the edges. I used a brown ink pad to darken the edges and stamped crowns on the page. I then used a rub on transfer at the bottom just to add a pop of color. And I love books, so it just seemed appropriate.

Camouflaged reinforcement.

I applied the dictionary page to the bookmark with more Mod Podge. I then punched a hole at the top, used some more ink to color a couple of paper hole reinforcements. I added those to the holes and then covered the whole bookmark with another coat of Mod Podge.

I really, really heart books.

While that was drying, I made a tassel from a bit of recycled ribbon (I hoard bits of ribbon from everything), a piece of twine, and a heart-shaped velvety bead.

I then sat back and admired how clever I was to pick a page that covered ephemeral to epistle. Epic!

  1. A great use for a ripped book. I actually went and bought a cheap copy of a book to use since I didn't have any at home I wanted to cut up.
